Renowned for her minimalist designs, Phoebe Philo steers Céline’s Spring 2014 collection in a surprising new direction, featuring bold brushstroke patterns inspired by Brassaï’s “Graffiti” series. This unexpected pivot turned out to be highly influential.
On this asymmetrical skirt, the brushstroke design is printed on pleated silk, showcasing varying degrees of transparency, with blacks and reds being the most sheer. The slightly more opaque off-white areas are layered with text from The New York Times and The Guardian, all dated August 5, 2011 (the significance of this date remains open to interpretation). The topics covered include current events like the stock market and oil exploration, as well as obituaries of notable figures, all tied together by their focus on men and male-centric issues.
