Black Lining Dress
Size IT 40 / FR 36 / US 6 -
A rare and evocative piece from Martin Margiela's FW 1990 collection.
This black sleeveless dress represents one of the most iconic moments in fashion history: the designer's exploration of linings as garments.
For the first time, Margiela presented a full series of dresses composed entirely of shimmering viscose lining—stripped of external artifice and transformed into a radical act of deconstruction and subversion.
Cut in a columnar silhouette, the dress gently clings to the form, its minimalist elegance offset by subtle structural details—raw seams, visible folds, and faint creases that echo the artisanal, almost ghostly, ethos of Margiela’s early work.
The visible “scars” and architectural tension in the fabric are the very expression of the Maison’s philosophy: beauty in process, memory, and imperfection.
Famously worn by Kristina De Coninck, the Belgian model and Margiela muse, as captured in a backstage image by Marina Faust.
