Presented on the Fall/Winter 1998 runway, this Hermès by Martin Margiela black wool dress was styled as an elongated black column over trousers. Its simplicity is deliberate: a deep V-neckline, long straight sleeves and an exceptionally long, almost monastic silhouette allow the proportion, movement and quality of the fabric to define the garment.
Cut from 100% black wool, the dress has a relaxed, straight construction with generous width through the body rather than a conventionally fitted waist. This understated volume is characteristic of Margiela’s work for Hermès, where comfort, movement and longevity were central to the design.

• one on the back near the shoulder area
