A particularly strong Hermès design from Martin Margiela’s tenure at the house, from the Spring/Summer 2002 collection. The same wrap construction appears on the runway in pale neutral versions, while this example is executed in a red linen that gives the rigorously minimal silhouette a considerably more graphic presence.

Cut sleeveless with an elongated proportion, the dress is constructed around a deep overlapping V-front.
One panel crosses diagonally over the body and is secured at the side by a narrow adjustable strap with a small metal buckle, allowing the garment to be subtly shaped at the waist without interrupting its clean line. It features 2 side pockets.
An internal fabric tie provides additional security beneath the wrap. When opened, the construction reveals the simplicity of the pattern.

The design encapsulates Margiela’s approach at Hermès: practical clothing reduced to exceptionally precise gestures, where function becomes the principal decorative language. The austere wrap construction, natural linen texture and absence of unnecessary embellishment create a garment that is both utilitarian and quietly sensual. The red coloration adds tension to the otherwise restrained architecture of the piece.

Good overall condition. Slight marks below the armpits consistent with previous wear.
Natural slubs and irregularities are present throughout the linen and are inherent to the character of the fabric.
