Exceptional Yves Saint Laurent Rive Gauche jumpsuit from the Spring/Summer 1975 collection, dating from one of the most important periods in Saint Laurent’s development of the jumpsuit as a sophisticated alternative to conventional evening tailoring.

Cut in black wool, the piece has a long, lean silhouette with a pointed shirt collar, full-length front metal zipper and dramatically wide straight legs.
A fine self-fabric drawstring defines the waist and finishes with elaborate black passementerie tassels, giving an otherwise exceptionally restrained design a distinctly Saint Laurent detail. The long sleeves are softly gathered into buttoned cuffs.

The design is closely related to the black jumpsuit presented in Saint Laurent’s Spring/Summer 1975 haute couture collection, seen on the runway that season.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art preserves a Spring/Summer 1975 Yves Saint Laurent jumpsuit in its Costume Institute collection, described as wool, leather and silk; the Met also holds other Saint Laurent jumpsuits from the surrounding 1973–76 period.

This Rive Gauche example represents the ready-to-wear expression of that 1975 vocabulary and is particularly remarkable for its preservation. It appears never to have been worn, and the exceptionally long original hem remains unaltered — a very rare condition for a garment that is fifty years old.
